Business of the Year Award
The Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce recently named Current Mechanical as the recipient
of its annual "Business of the Year" award. The award was announced by Chamber President
Phil Laux as part of the luncheon event of the Verizon Business Expo on May 1 at the Allen County War
Memorial Coliseum. Business of the Year winners were selected on the basis of growth and expansion
experienced during the past year, as well as their use of innovation and their community involvement.
Current Mechanical, named the Chamber's Large Business of the Year 2002, is a customer oriented
mechanical contracting business, specializing in commercial installations and service. This family-owned
company was established in Leo in 1978 by Robert Current. The firm quickly grew to 60 employees, and in 1986,
it moved to Fort Wayne. In 2002, Current Mechanical renovated the old Falstaff Brewery -- an eyesore that
had been abandoned for 12 years -- at a cost of $3 million and moved its headquarters to that location in
southeast Fort Wayne. Current Mechanical's staff grew from 79 to 115 employees in 2002. The firm ended the year
with gross sales of more than $17 million, which was a six percent increase over 2001. In addition to their
remarkable growth, Current Mechanical has been very active in the community.
